Desire to win unchanged in Evergreen Speedway's super stock champ
Scott Whitmore - Herald Writer April 11, 2008

New team, new car, new competitors, new racing format.

In an off-season of change, there has been one constant in Evergreen Speedway's super stock division.

Beginning this weekend, three time and defending champion John Zaretzke will take on all comers in a bid to win a fourth title.

“I haven't been this excited to go racing in a long time,” Zaretzke said Wednesday. “It's been a joy working with Frank and Lena Coleman and Coleman Motorsports. We're really prepared to go late-model racing.”

Weather permitting, the super stock division — the top tier of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at the Monroe track — will help kick off Evergreen's 2008 weekly racing season on Saturday.

Zaretzke, who has been racing super stocks at Evergreen since 1988, announced late last month that his own JZ Motorsports would combine efforts with the Colemans this season.

With Lex Johnson, Evergreen Speedway's new promoter and last season's fourth-place driver, no longer driving for the Colemans, the team has been readying for Zaretzke the car Johnson drove last season.

“We've torn it apart and put all new stuff in there,” Zaretzke said. “It's virtually going to be a brand new race car.”

Zaretzke — who previously won super stock titles in 1998 and 2004, and was the 1988 bomber division rookie of the year — said he hoped the new car would be ready for the third race of the season. Until then he will drive the car he won the title with last year.

Johnson isn't the only familiar driver who will be missing from this year's championship battle.

Shane Harding, last year's runner-up, is expected for the season opener but has said he will not compete for points at Evergreen this season. Harding, whose wife is expecting the couple's first child later this month, will instead pick and choose races to compete in at various regional and Canadian tracks.

Roger Habich and Darin Stordahl, who finished fifth and sixth, will also be absent. Stordahl will continue to race late models as part of the ASA Northwest Tour and Habich is taking time off to be with his family.

“The guys who finished in the top five last year are the guys I thought I'd have to contend with for a championship,” Zaretzke said.

One driver who will be back — and Zaretzke's pre-season pick to be his biggest competition for the title — is Naima Lang, who finished third overall last year.

Lang added crew chief Jesse Jensen to his team during the off-season, and together they built a new car to race this year. The last car Jensen built with Lang won two bomber division titles, the first with Lang behind the wheel in 2004 and then last season with Lane Sundholm driving.

“There's no doubt that car will be state-of-the-art,” Zaretzke said of Lang and Jensen's new super stock. “Jesse Jensen knows how to build a race car. If Jesse and Naima can stay together as a team, they'll be tough guys to beat for a championship.”

Although Zaretzke considered Lang to be his immediate concern, he noted there will be several up-and-coming drivers to watch out for.

Last year's rookie of the year Mike Holden and brother Jeff Holden, who finished seventh and eighth in points, will return for their sophomore season, as will 11th-place finisher Jeff Knight.

“A lot of drivers that were in front of me are not running,” Mike Holden said. “I'm moving to the front before we even start by process of elimination. Hopefully I'm right there all season.”

Jill Lang, who ran two super stock races last year, will compete full time this season in addition to racing in the bomber division.

Moving up after top-10 finishes in Evergreen's bomber division will be James Mugge and Steve Ptacek. Daniel Moore, who raced in the ARCA West truck series last year, has also decided to compete in Monroe.

Brothers Nick and Rowan Carey, who raced in the Northwest Legends series last season, will take turns driving for Coleman Motorsports in Zaretzke's old car once the new one is ready to go.

“We're gaining quite a few more cars than we're losing,” Zaretzke said.

Fans will have more chances to get to know the newer drivers thanks to a key program change for the super stocks.

Evergreen manager Terry Buell announced at the late February drivers' meeting that each time the super stocks are scheduled to race there will be two 10-lap heat races at the beginning of the program — promptly at 7 p.m. — followed by a 40-lap main later on.

“Fans are going to get to see our feature series twice … that's good for the drivers and their sponsors, too,” Buell said at the time. “We're going to put races in front of the fans left and right.”

Both heats and mains will count for season points.

Other highlights on the super stock schedule this season include the mid-season championship on June 28, a 125-lap race as part of the Washington 500 on July 26 and the big-track championship season finale on Sept. 20.

ZARETZKE Partners With Coleman Motorsports
JZ Motorsports PR - March 23, 2008

SULTAN, WA – JZ Motorsports will partner with Coleman Motorsports to compete for the 2008 Evergreen Speedway Whelen All American Series Championship. Driver, John Zaretzke, will pilot the Zipfizz/Pinnacle Group - Whelen All American Series Super Stock. The partnership came together after Coleman Motorsports driver, Lex Johnson, decided to take a break from racing to focus on his new ownership of Evergreen Speedway.

This unique partnership will rely on resources and crew members from JZ Motorsports and Coleman Motorsports. JZ Motorsports, John Zaretzke's newly founded racing team, will be based out of the new JZ Motorsports shop in Sultan, WA. Coleman Motorsports, owned by Lena and Frank Coleman, will operate out of the JZ Motorsports stables.

“We are so happy to have John as our driver, we love to race and with John piloting the Coleman Motorsports car we can go out and have some real fun with a shot at the Evergreen Championship” said Lena.

“Lena and I are really excited about battling for a championship with JZ driving. Things always happen for a reason and I think the events of earlier this year will result in a super team, lots of excitement for the fans and the highest potential for a championship while having fun doing it” said Frank.

"I'm thankful for this opportunity and look forward to teaming with, and driving for Lena and Frank. Coleman Motorsports has always had top notch equipment and I'm excited about the upcoming season" said Zaretzke. “This partnership has brought a level of energy to the team that we have not had in the past 4 or 5 seasons.”

Zaretzke will compete in all 18 of the Evergreen Speedway Whelen All American Series events schedule for 2008 with the first event scheduled for April 12.

ZARETZKE will defend Super Stock Title at Evergreen
Scott Whitmore - Herald Writer March 7, 2008

Three-time champion excited to drive for new owners Frank and Lena Coleman

There was bad news and worse news Friday for drivers racing in the super-stock division at Evergreen Speedway.

The bad news: three-time and reigning champion John Zaretzke announced — finally — that he will indeed defend his title.

The worse news?

Zaretzke, who will drive this year for car owners Frank and Lena Coleman, is feeling more energized and enthused about racing than he has in quite some time.

“It's a new invigorated program, driving for Coleman Motorsports,” Zaretzke said Friday. “The car owners are a good family, really into racing. They came to me and asked me to drive and win them a championship.

“I'm more excited than I've been in four or five years of racing late model cars.”

Even without his renewed enthusiasm, Zaretzke's decision to race for points in the top-tier of the Whelen All-American Series this season should make him the opening-day favorite to repeat as champion.

He won six of 17 races in the super stock division last year, and recorded a total of 12 top-five finishes. Another factor in his favor for winning a fourth title is the fact that many veteran drivers — including two-time champion Shane Harding, Roger Habich, and Darin Stordahl — are not expected to race in the super stock division this year.

For the past several weeks, Zaretzke had kept his racing plans for the upcoming season quiet as he considered his options.

“I didn't have a lot of fun in the past couple of years,” Zaretzke said. “I didn't have enough guys to get the car done … I was always working late Friday night and early Saturday morning.”

Zaretzke said combining the Colemans' race team with his own crew will “make it easier for us who do this as a hobby.”

Frank Coleman agreed with Zaretzke, saying he expects to be a hands-on owner — literally.

“We're real active. I put in more hours than anybody last year … I took Fridays off to work on the car,” Coleman said. “We're very committed.”

The Coleman's driver last year was Lex Johnson, who agreed Thursday to purchase the Evergreen motorsports operations contract from promoter Mickey Beadle.

Johnson's move to promoter at the Monroe track had no impact on the Colemans, who had lined up a new driver for this season, only to have him back out a week ago.

“We had a car and a driver, and then we didn't have a driver,” Frank Coleman said. “So we asked John and he said yes.”

“We're happy about that,” Lena Coleman added. “He's a good driver and we're happy to have him.”

Zaretzke said he will drive the Rock-It Motorsports car he raced last season in the season-opening Northwest Tour race at Evergreen on March 29, then move into the Coleman Motorsports car for the super-stock opener on April 12.

“We've got some work to do to get the car ready,” Zaretzke said. “The excitement level is high. It's great to have a new team that's excited about racing, and a goal: winning a championship.”

One other goal that Zaretzke had mentioned in the past — winning his first title in the second-tier bomber division at the Monroe track — may drop to the wayside.

“If everything goes perfect, I'll run the bombers for a championship, too,” Zaretzke said. “We'll know in two or three weeks how prepared we are (to complete in the super stock division). If we're not ready, the bomber goes on the back burner.”

Whether he's going for one title or two, Zaretzke said he was pleased to drive for owners who share his passion for racing.

“We're going to race hard and have the car set up right,” Frank Coleman said. “But we're going to have fun, lots of fun, too.

"We love racing.”

JOHN ZARETZKE Yet to Decide on Season Plans
Scott Whitmore - Herald Writer - March 4, 2008

Evergreen's super stock champ may defend title, may race bombers

Patient observers of late-model racing at Evergreen Speedway have been wondering for some time whether two-time and reigning super stock champion John Zaretzke would defend his title.

They’re going to have to wait a bit longer.

“I don’t have any answers yet,” Zaretzke said Tuesday. “I don’t really know.”

Zaretzke, who also earned the title of Washington’s first NASCAR champion after winning the top tier of the Whelen All American series at the Monroe track last season, said his indecision is not related to a lack of funding.

“Sponsorship is firmed up, what I’m going to drive is not,” he said.

Zaretzke has wavered between points racing in the super stock division at Evergreen, or trying to win a championship in the second-tier bomber division — something he has not yet accomplished.

“I’ll either run a full season in bombers for the championship,” Zaretzke said, “Or a full super stocks schedule for points with some other races on off-days.”

Hardware also isn’t an issue: Zaretzke said he has cars built or in the process of being built to suit whatever plan he decides on. But he turned coy when pressed for what was holding up his decision.

Said Zaretzke: “I’ll know by the end of the week, hopefully. Let’s leave it at that.”

Zaretzke added that regardless of his season plans, he would like to race in Evergreen’s season-opening ASA Northwest Tour race on March 29.

JOHN ZARETZKE WINS NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WASHINGTON -
Honored As One Of The Top Drivers In North America
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Nov 1, 2007

NASCAR announced John Zaretzke as the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Washington championship.
Zaretzke had seven wins, 13 top fives and 16 top 10s in 18 starts, racing at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe. He earned $2, 000 for the Washington championship. Just 28 drivers out of the thousands of participants in NASCAR's grassroots, local-racing program - which encompasses tracks throughout the United States and Canada - earned a similar honor.

The crowning of champions on the state level renews a tradition of honoring the best short-track racers in each state, which dates back to the earliest days of NASCAR. The NASCAR Washington champion was determined by the driver's highest 18 finishes at NASCAR sanctioned tracks within the state.

This was also the first year of a long-term sponsorship for Whelen Engineering as the title sponsor of NASCAR's weekly racing program. The Connecticut-based company is a leading manufacturer of automotive, aviation, industrial and public emergency lighting and warning systems.

Since its inception, NASCAR's local racing series has served as a springboard in the careers of many top drivers. NASCAR stars Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte, Jamie McMurray, Elliott Sadler and Brian Vickers all began their careers racing their local short tracks.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion along with the U.S. state and Canadian provincial champions, track champions and other special award winners will be honored at the series awards banquet to be
held on November 10 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

JOHN ZARETZKE WINS NASCAR WASHINGTON STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Evergreen Speedway - Sept 16, 2007

John Zaretzke made it to his third Track Championship and first ever NASCAR Washington State Championship Saturday night. Finishing fourth was good enough to best the two-time Defending Champion Shane Harding who started the day just 28 points behind. Lex Johnson won his third race of the season in the 150 lap main event with Harding second and Naima Lang third. Rookie of the Year Mike Holden had an excellent fifth place finish.

DRIVERS SET TO BURN RUBBER AT THE FAIR
Seattle Times - Jim Riley - Aug 22, 2007

MONROE — The race for the Evergreen Speedway track championship has heated up just in time for the big crowds that turn out during the Evergreen State Fair.

The superstocks will race twice during the fair, which runs Thursday through Sept. 3, and suddenly John Zaretzke of Monroe has some competition as he tries to win the third points championship of his career.

Two-time defending champion Shane Harding of Langley, B.C., has won two races in a row and trails Zaretzke by 36 points. There are three races left in the season; 50-lap main events on Saturday and Sept. 1 and a 150-lap season finale on Sept. 15.

Zaretzke , who won five races in a row earlier in the season to build a big lead, has finished seventh twice in a row and has 356 points.

Harding has won twice in a row and has 320 points.

"We sure hope to win the next race, but if we don't you can be sure that the blue No. 39 [driven by Harding] won't," Zaretzke said. "I've always said my job is to win races, but now is the time when I have to start thinking about winning a points championship."

Harding, who came from behind to win the championship last season, thinks he has a shot to do it again.

"We go into every race with the intention of winning, laying it all on the table and let the points fall where they may," he said.

"I have to make sure I have a race car that can win all three races."

Harding crashed the first race of the season in March and struggled to get back into contention.

"We're finally getting back to 100 percent," he said. "We had a bad-handling race car and then bad luck and that really put us behind."

Harding said he and his entire team always love racing during the fair.

"It's our favorite weekend of the year," he said. "We all bring our families and come down early and eat all that good fair food.

"There's always lots of people to watch so we always have a good time."

The fair also brings out more drivers and a high car count is expected for races on both Saturday and Sept. 1.

Every type of racing that occurs at Evergreen Speedway over the course of the season will be represented during the fair. There will be five nights of racing, beginning Saturday with the Figure-8 Nationals, along with the NASCAR superstocks and bombers.

Four straight nights of racing begin Aug. 31 and include NASCAR night on Sept. 1, a demolition derby and rollover contest on Sept. 2, and the popular drifting championships on Sept. 3.

The demolition derby usually draws the biggest crowds and includes a fireworks show.

"We usually have between 5,000 and 8,000 come out for the demolition derby," said Evergreen Speedway Track Manager Terry Buehl. "We do a fantastic job of wrecking stuff during the fair. All of the pieces we do over the course of the year we combine during the five nights of racing at the fair."

All of the NASCAR drivers will run a memorial lap on Sept. 1 in honor of Bob Beadle, the longtime driver, owner and promoter who passed away on Aug. 12.

Beadle, father of Evergreen Track President Mickey Beadle, was responsible for bringing the first NASCAR 500-lap race to the Northwest when the Washington 500 was run at Evergreen Speedway in 1985. The race was won by Derrick Cope, who went on to win the Daytona 500.

Beadle, who was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2003, was 73. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Mill Creek Country Club.

ZIPFIZZ POWERS ZARETZKE TO 5 WINS IN A ROW
Rock-It Motorsports Marketing - June 20, 2007

DUVALL, Washington -- John Zaretzke and the Zipfizz Rockit Motorsports Team won their 5th consecutive race and the 6th race of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Stock season at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday, June 16th. After a 5th place finish on the 5/8 mile oval in the opening race of the season, Zaretzke and the Zipfizz / Speedway Chevrolet Monte Carlo were ready for redemption. Qualifying was cancelled due to weather, which put Zaretzke in the 9th starting position. Zaretzke quickly made his way to the front, taking th e lead form Roger Habich on lap 29. Habich briefly retook the lead during a restart on lap 47, but Zaretzke regained the lead with a textbook “crossover” pass going through turns 1 and 2. Zaretzke never relinquished the lead again and took the checkers on lap 100. After capping off the win with his signature “Zoughnuts”, he thanked his sponsors Zipfizz Energy Drinks, Speedway Chevrolet, By Design Rockeries, Redmond Cycle, Liquid Lime Lounge, Hayen and Associates, and BDR Towing and Truck Repair. He also wished his father “Crazy” Carl Zaretzke a Happy Father's Day. John Zaretzke said "Our racecar was great all day, right off the truck. We're just using the same approach to every race - come with the best prepared racecar with basic setups used from knowledge gained in the past, while focusing on one goal ….winning races".

Following the racing events, the Speedway Chevrolet crate engine was removed per Evergreen Speedway rules regarding consecutive wins. The motor was inspected by Evergreen Speedway on Monday, June 18th and was found un-tampered with and completely legal. Per Evergreen Speedway rules, a new/refreshed motor was given to the Rockit Motorsports Team on Monday evening so it could be installed and ready for racing action this coming Saturday.

Rockit Motorsports would like to thank all of the fans that support us every weekend and our associate sponsors - ADH Consulting, Alternative Blasters, Fire-Down Graphics, Joes Racing Products, Lane Automotive, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Coatings, Total Power Batteries, and Winters Performance Products.

RACING TOWARDS NATIONAL FINISH
Seattle Times - Jim Riley - June 20, 2007

The closer the racing gets at Evergreen Speedway, the more John Zaretzke seems to win.

The veteran driver from Monroe has already taken the checkered flag six times in eight races this season, turning the race for the track championship into a one-car victory lap.

"Winning a points championship is great, but we're here to win races," Zaretzke said after holding off Kelly Mann to win last Saturday's 100-lap main event. "When we win, it's fun. When we don't win, it's not."

Zaretzke, who celebrated his latest triumph with an eight-doughnut burnout that drew a standing ovation, is used to having fun.

He was the superstock track champion in 1998 and 2004 and is enjoying the mandatory crate-motor program in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series that has bunched the field and put a premium on driving skills.

"The crate motors have leveled the playing field and it really makes you drive the race car," Zaretzke said of the mandatory Chevrolet racing engines that can't be modified. "The best race-car drivers and the best race teams are winning with guys driving door handle to door handle."

Zaretzke, 35, has won five races in a row and leads Naima Lang by 58 points in a division that has had 22 different drivers earn points this season.

Two-time defending track champion Shane Harding is third, 74 points off Zaretzke's blistering pace.

"We'll never give up, but John Zaretzke is a great driver and he'd have to have a couple of really bad nights for anyone to have a chance," Harding said. "It's been pretty rough for us. I had a two-year string when I could do no wrong. Now no matter what I do I can't seem to get a break."

Zaretzke, whose Rockit Motorsports team picked up Zipfizz energy drink as a sponsor before the season, has actually backed off his aggressive style of driving just a bit.

"I think I've matured as a race-car driver," Zaretzke said. "I'm trying to make more of the right decisions. There have been some three-wide situations this year that I've backed out of, and that's not like me."

Zaretzke also races figure-8 cars and needs a few more titles to catch his father, Carl Zaretzke, who won a total of seven figure-8 and superstock titles at Evergreen.

"My father was the winningest driver in Evergreen history and he gave me a lot of pointers," Zaretzke said. "I don't know if anybody can really teach you how to be a race-car driver, but I learned a lot from watching my dad. My dad was really clean and concise with a race car."

Zaretzke, who is in his 18th year of racing, thinks his winning edge may be because he not only drives cars, he builds them.

"When something goes wrong, I can get on the radio and tell the crew exactly what is wrong, what bolt and what nut needs to be fixed and where they can find the right tool in the tool box," he said.

Although Evergreen Speedway drivers are at a huge disadvantage because there aren't any other nearby NASCAR tracks where they can make up races if they have a bad finish, Zaretzke could compete for a national championship if he keeps winning.

"It's something that's on my radar," Zaretzke said. "I know that if I can't win on any given night, I have to at least finish second to earn those points. Winning a national championship is easy. All we have to do is keep winning races."

Zaretzke will race his new figure-8 car in Indiana in September and in Irwindale, Calif., in October. Then he'll drop a bigger motor in his superstock car and compete at the Fall Classic at Yakima Speedway, Sept. 28 to Oct. 1. He won the race in Yakima in 2004.

After his win on Saturday, Zaretzke's motor was confiscated and torn apart to make sure nothing had been done to alter it.

"We're fine with that," Zaretzke said. "We don't have anything to hide. Our car handles so well that we can pick up 2 miles per hour of speed in the corners and with the horsepower the same that's hard to make up."

WHY IS HE SO FAST?
RogerHabich.com - June 19, 2007

I regularly field questions concerning the guy we all are trying to catch this year, John Zaretzke.  "Why is he so much faster than everyone?" they ask, "He must be cheating."  It is difficult to imagine how one person can be so much better than the rest considering we all have to follow the same tightly policed restrictions. This year, it is John, the last two years it was Shane Harding.  When the race cars are so similar as they are in  NASCAR racing, all of the little things we do add up to a combination that either works or it doesn't. When we find that combo, we stick to it and tweak it until we have the perfect set up for our driving style.  I DON'T THINK HE IS CHEATING!

I have followed John this year and tried to understand how his car can corner so well. I mean, while I am waiting for my car to slow down enough to make the turn, his is already turned and is accelerating off the corner. My conclusion.......(pause for suspense purposes)......his combination is better than ours right now.  Yep that's it. He has done his homework and built a set up out of the best parts money can buy. His shocks are the same ones that the Nextel Cup cars run and he's got someone who knows what they are doing building them. His team is strong with Rodney, Robert, and Lil B who have been with him for as long as I can remember. Oh yeah, and their driver, what's his name?  John has tons of natural ability and more car control than anyone I have seen drive.  This is the same guy who went to Phoenix for the Southwest Tour race, missed the drivers meeting and had to start at the rear of the field and won the race. The guy can drive.  So why aren't we watching him run against Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne this Sunday on television?  The only answer I can think of is he hasn't dominated in the right venue to get noticed by the right people.

So what do I do about this little problem that stands between me and my first victory this year?  Keep trying of course!  Every week we have gotten a little faster, tweaked the car to perform a little better, and learned more about what the tires are going to do. We run the fastest laps of the race nearly every week so we've just got to figure out how to make that fast lap be near the end of the race versus the beginning.  In all types of competition, we only go as fast as needed to win, it's human nature. The bar is just set high this year by the #51 Zipfizz Chevrolet team and we've all got some work to do to catch them.
