Bacon's $10,000 TNT Triumph Highlights Big XXX Weekend

8/24/09

Brady Bacon's $10,000 TNT Sprint Bandit win at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, MO highlighted a huge weekend of wins for Triple X Race Co. Other race winners included Colton Heath, Patrick Bourke, Billy Aton, Brad Ryun, Jeremy Quick, Sean MacDonell and Seth Hespe.

In TNT Sprint Bandit action, Brady Bacon wrapped up a hugely successful week for the Mike & Megan Eubanks Tel-Star Communications team by picking up the big $10,000 winner's check and pedal car trophy by capturing the series finale at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, MO. The win secured the series championship for Bacon, who won three out of the four races during the week, bolstering his 410 nonwing TNT Sprint Bandit record over the past two years to six race wins in ten races.

Seth Hespe loves his new XXX Ford Focus Midget, and it loves Seth just as much, as the pair pulled off a clean sweep this past Saturday night at Gray's Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA. Coming from eighth place, Hespe worked his way up the field to the lead in a hurry, dominating the field as he picked up his second victory of the year.

Colton Heath picked up race win number eight in 2009 by grabbing the lead on lap 23 on the 410 main event at Skagit Speedway in Alger, WA. After Eric Fisher and his XXX chassis led the first 22 circuits, Heath made an outlaw-style slidejob stick coming out of turn four to secure the victory and bring himself to within 19 points of the division lead with less than a month of racing remaining.

Patrick Bourke has an impressive hot streak of his own that he's riding at the moment. Since switching in to a XXX chassis a little over a month ago, Bourke has now reached victory lane three times in the five races he's run the car, the latest triumph coming at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, CO in URSS action. Bourke's main event win was made more special by the fact that he started ninth overall, and passed nearly a car per lap on his way to the front of the field by lap 13. He also won his heat race.

"Wild" Billy Aton has been riding a hot streak all season long in his wingless spec sprint. Aton won again this past weekend, triumphing over a 20 car field at Antioch Speedway in California. The win was Aton's sixth of 2009, as the 18 year old continues to lead the points standings at both Antioch and Ocean Speedway in CA.

Triple X Race Co dealer BRE out of Missouri has had a good run of things themselves, picking up another win this weekend with their house car. After Austin Alumbaugh took the car to victory last week with the MSCA, BRE traveled to Jackson Speedway in Minnesota for the Jackson Nationals where Brad Ryun piloted the mount to victory lane on the Friday preliminary night in the 305 division.

Jeremy Quick had a little luck go his way en route to taking his XXX to victory lane with the CRSA at Five Mile Point Speedway in New York. Leading the race with 15 laps in the books, Quick found himself with a right rear tire flattening as a torrential down pour hit the track, giving Quick the win in the rain shortened feature. With four points nights left in 2009, Quick is looking to score his second straight series win as he's just a few tallies behind the series leader.

Sean MacDonnell has had quite the ride of things in the Gee & Gee Racing house car, taking it to victory lane for the second time at Alberta's premier track, Castrol Raceway in the limited sprint class. The official XXX dealer in Alberta, Gee's XXX house car is among the large contingent of Alberta Sportsman Sprints finding victory lane in XXX chassis.

Alger, WA - Janicki Industries night at Skagit Speedway saw two point's battles decided and one points battle get a lot closer. In the Associated Asphalt 410 Sprints, Eric Fisher looked destined to pick up his first career victory as he was a rocket ship for the first portion of the race in his JnR Paving #59 XXX. While Fisher set the pace, Colton Heath methodically worked his way into the second position in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX. Around lap 19, Fisher jumped the cushion in turn two, throwing him off rhythm and allowing Heath to close the gap. Following a yellow on lap 22, Heath dove hard underneath Fisher coming out of turn four and put a major league slide job on him, capturing the lead and the victory just a few laps later, his third of the year in the division. The race win brought Heath to within 19 points of division leader Jesse Whitney who finished third in his Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Quick time was Jayme Barnes in the LAW Motorsports #33 XXX. Heat race wins went to Barnes and Rick Fauver in the Reynolds / Fauver Racing #F1 XXX.

Mike Melwicks grabbed his second main event win in a row in the Budweiser 360 Sprints, catching and passing Alan Munn on lap 23 to score the win this week from his eighth place starting spot in his CSA Transportation #2 Maxim. Evan Funk pushed hard and got around Munn on the final lap to score second in the Performance RC #18 Rocket. Munn held on for third in his Munn Construction #42 XXX. Melwicks was also fast time on the night. Heat winners were Rod Perkins in the Classic Rock 92.9 #69 XXX and Danny Kirkpatrick in the K&B Racing #5x XXX. Looking at the point's battle, Brock Lemley stretched his lead to almost 100 points, virtually securing the points championship with two races to go.

In the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints, Lyle Woods ran wire to wire for the victory in his K&B Racing #12k Becker just one week after putting the car on its lid. Kelsey Carpenter finished second in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX, stretching his point lead to almost 100 points as well, putting him almost out of reach ala Lemley. Third went to Marc Schutte in the Rudy Blumenhagen owned #72 XXX. Heat race wins went to Glen Reinstra in the Right Way Plumbing #13gr XXX, Dave Mead in the Hilander Well Service #3m Eagle, and Bill Rude in the North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle.

It was a raging battle in the Outlaw Hornet main that had the spectators captivated. Freddy Vela jumped to an early lead with Chris Erickson (piloting the car Cory Swatzina is usually in) hot in tow. As the race wore on, Vela and Erickson would go door panel to door panel for the lead, exchanging the point multiple times between laps 9 -13. On the exit of corner four on lap 13, Erickson slid his car up into the groove Vela was using, slamming the door shut on Freddy as he jetted away for the win. Vela would hang on for second, with Tyler Ketchum running third. Heat wins went to Ashley Lewellen and Don Ward.

Heath Provides Fireworks On Track at Midseason Championship Night at Skagit Speedway

A near capacity crowd enjoyed on track fireworks followed by a huge fireworks extravaganza that lit up the night sky at Mid Season Championship Night presented by Les Schwab at Skagit Speedway. In the Associated Asphalt 410 division, Colton Heath was a bottle rocket all night, taking the lead from Jesse Whitney on lap 2 and rocketing out to a the win in the Leo Voight owned Sanford Tire #5 XXX. After winning the scramble, Heath powered his way around the top side to a winning margin of almost a half track, crossing the line five seconds before second place Jesse Whitney in his Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Third was Jason Solwold in the Cavalli Construction #73 Maxim. With the top eight cars in owner's points locked into the scramble, the remainder of the field qualified for their starting position. Chris Schmelzle was the fastest 410 qualifier at 11.727 in the Talcore Walls & Ceilings #57c Lejuene.

The finish of the night was in the Budweiser 360 Sprints, where Jason Solwold caught race leader Brock Lemley in turn for coming to the checkered flag and passed him in heavy traffic to score his fourth win of 2009, his third at Skagit Speedway, and second overall in the C&S Construction #51 owned by Jon Farrell. Lemley led up until lap 24 7/8 but still grabbed a solid second on his birthday weekend, driving the Kentch Bros., Haling Seafood sponsored #40 XXX. Third went to Mike Harris in the Shark Racing Engines #44 XXX. Lemley won the scramble. Jared Peterson was quick time in his Frontier Chevrolet #9 Rocket.

In the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints, Kelsey Carpenter scored his sixth main event win of the year on Mid Season Championship night, passing race leader Bill Rude in lapped traffic on lap 14 on the way to victory lane. The win strengthened Carpenter's chances at repeating as division champion in his Dri-Eaz sponsored #27c XXX. Rude finished second in the North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle. Marc Schutte was third in the Rudy Blumenhagen owned #72 XXX. Carpenter won the scramble.

Right front tires were the story of night in the Outlaw Hornet division, where no less than three tires literally came off their cars, causing multiple yellow flags and shortening the feature to 11 laps. At the end of the feature, it was Cory Swatzina standing victorious, garnering his fourth win of the year and strengthening his points lead. His brother Wade finished second, with Tyler Ketchum finishing third. Swatzina also won the scramble.

Skagit Speedway will take the weekend of July 18th off for the Deming Speedway Clay Cup. Action resumes on July 25th for another round of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series, with action kicking off at 7pm. For ticket information, log on to

AS SUMMER HEATS UP, SO DO XXX DRIVERS

It was another fantastic weekend for the XXX chassis. A number of drivers earned repeat victories, including one who won three straight races. At Placerville Speedway Andy Forsberg got one for the thumb, winning his fifth 360 sprint car feature of the season. Also on Saturday night, Glenn Borden Jr. scored his second straight victory to boost his points lead at Grays Harbor Raceway. Kelsey Carpenter continued his dominance of the sportsman sprints at Skagit Speedway. Colton Heath won his third straight main event in either a 410 sprint car of 600 mini-sprint on Friday night.

Andy Forsberg is having one of the best seasons of his career this year. On Saturday, Forsberg continued his season-long success as he won his fifth main event of the season aboard his No. 92 XXX sprint car. For the fourth time, it was at Placerville Speedway in California. In addition to his Civil War series victory, it was his third win in weekly competition. After setting fast time in qualifying, Forsberg started fourth in the main event and quickly got to the lead. Forsberg was challenged several times, but held the lead every time.

At Grays Harbor Raceway, Glenn Borden Jr. had climbed his way into the points lead in the 360 sprint car division by the end of May despite not winning a race yet. That first changed last week when he won his first race of the season to give his points lead a boost. On Saturday, Borden further extended his points lead when he won at Grays Harbor Raceway for the second straight week. Borden quickly made his way up to the front of the field on a racy track and made quick work of rookie Logan Forler to take the lead. Borden, a former track champion at Grays Harbor with a XXX chassis in 2007, then had to deal with heavy traffic while reigning track champ Jay Cole challenged him for the lead on a couple of occasions. Borden, however, skillfully worked his way around the slower cars and secured another big victory in his No. 72.

Triple X Race Co.'s own Kelsey Carpenter continued his dominance of Skagit Speedway's sportsman sprint division aboard his No. 27c XXX. After winning his heat race, Carpenter would go on to lead 20 laps of the main event. For the defending track champion and current points leader, it was his fourth main event triumph of the season. It also continued the XXX sprint car chassis' win streak at Skagit. Every week Skagit Speedway has raced, at least one main event has been won by a driver in a XXX sprint car.

All season, Carpenter's XXX co-worker Colton Heath had close calls in both his No. 5x XXX sprint car and his No. 2 XXX mini-sprint. He finally broke through the prior weekend, winning the 600 stock mini-sprint feature at Deming Speedway on the Friday night, and then repeated the next night at Skagit Speedway with his 410 sprint car. This weekend saw Colton back those wins up with another 600 stock mini-sprint main event victory at Deming Speedway on Friday, the third straight time he strapped into a XXX chassis and won a main event. He did not have the same success at Skagit as the week before, but on Saturday Colton came up from the 10th starting position to finish a very strong 2nd in the Dirt Cup tune-up race, which saw several out of towners come a week early to prepare for this week's 38th Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.

Triple X Race Co. would like to congratulate everyone who won in their XXX chassis this weekend!

Triple X Race Co. is also holidng an open house this week. Race teams are invited to the Triple X office and warehouse, just down the road from Skagit Speedway. Teams will have a place to work on their cars during this week's Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup. For more details, check out

Martinez Tunes Up for Dirt Cup with Big Win at Skagit Speedway

 6/13/2009

Alger, WA- Barry Martinez is officially geared up for the Van's Equipment Rentals & Sales Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway. After fading back to third on the initial start of the Associated Asphalt 410 main event, the Lynnwood WA resident battled his way back into contention in his Artisan Homes #66 J&J, powering around the inside of the track. After passing Jesse Whitney for second, Martinez set sail for race leader Jason Solwold who had taken the lead from Whitney on lap eight. Mired in heavy traffic, Martinez powered under Solwold coming off the fourth corner on lap fifteen to nose into the lead. Solwold saw Martinez and went to go for his lead back but made contact with lapped traffic, causing a spin out and collecting fourth place running Rick Fauver with him.
On the restart, Colton Heath would blow by Whitney for second and set sail for the leader Martinez. But it was not to be, as Martinez masterfully navigated the final laps of the Skagit 3/10 clay oval to take his second win of the year. Heath in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX finished second, with Whitney coming home third in the Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Whitney also set quick time. Heat wins went to Heath, Cory Chamberlain in the Bob & Lori Scott owned #7s Maxim and Chad Hillier in the APC Powdercoating #38 J&J.

Kelsey Carpenter raced to a division leading fourth main event win in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Aboard his Dri-Eaz sponsored #27c XXX, Kelsey led every lap of the feature, winning the race by 5.9 seconds. Second was Lyle Woods in the K&B Racing #12k Becker. Third went to Paul Burdick in the Precision Collision #9 XXX. Heat wins went to Carpenter and Burdick.

The Modifieds made their one and only appearance of 2009 at Skagit Speedway, with drivers coming from British Columbia all the way to Oregon to compete. Leroy Lawhead of Rochester WA led the initial three laps until Jason Beaulieu of Vancouver BC took the lead on lap four. Beaulieu continued to lead until he ran in to traffic (quite literally) on the 10th lap, spinning himself out and handing the lead back to Lawhead, who would hold on to win 10 laps later. Second was Craig Moore of Seabeck WA, third Scott Miller of Shelton WA making it an all Washington top three. Heat race wins went to Beaulieu and Lawhead.

Colton Heath wins Associated Asphalt 410 division at Skagit Speedway

Alger, WA - Colton Heath didn't go easy on himself en route to winning his first main event of the year in the Associated Asphalt 410 division at Skagit Speedway on round eight of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series. Heath rocketed out to the initial lead, but almost spun himself out in corner four on the sixth lap, giving the lead to former World of Outlaw competitor Chad Hillier. Heath battled back in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX, closing the gap between himself and Hillier, taking the lead back on lap twelve with a strong move on the inside of turn one. The night didn't get any easier, as Heath was in heavy lapped traffic and made contact with Kyle Oman, sending the latter into wall causing a red. The hits just kept on coming after the restart, as your leader again got into heavy traffic and made contact with Kelleigh Johnson, causing another yellow on lap 21. With Rick Fauver in the Reynolds/Fauver #F1 Maxim poised to strike, Heath would change his groove and block the bottom, sealing up an adventurous first win of 2009. Fauver brought home second, with Barry Martinez in the Advanced Sprint Car & Toys for Trucks #66 J&J coming in third. Quick time was Mitch Olson in the SC Fuels #98 KPC. Heath and Hillier, in the APC Powdercoating #38 J&J, won the heats.

Jared Peterson has really come into his own in his third full year of sprint car racing. Aboard his Frontier Chevrolet #9 Rocket, Peterson blitzed the Budweiser 360 Sprint field for his second win of the year at Skagit Speedway, leading every single lap of the main event. Rod Perkins ran second in the Classic Rock 92.9 #69 XXX, third going to Brian Kirkpatrick in the K&B Racing #5k XXX who also set quick time. Heat wins went to Perkins, Brock Lemley in the Haling Seafood #40 XXX and Robby Vaughn in the Jay's Automotive #29 Rocket.

Marc Schutte won his first main of 2009 in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints, leading every lap of the main event in the Rudy Blumenhagen owned #72 XXX. Kelsey Carpenter came from sixth to second in the Dri-Eaz#27c XXX. Third was Lyle Woods in the K&B Racing #12k Becker. The win was sweet redemption for Schutte who was leading a race three weeks ago when a steering rod broke, sending him into the wall and trashing his car. Heat race wins went to Woods and Carpenter.

Wade Swatzina and Ben Gunderson had a barn burner of a race going in the Outlaw Hornet class. For 18 laps, Gunderson dogged Swatzina, literally bumper to bumper around a beautiful main event track. Coming to lap 19, Gunderson made the wrong decision in lapped traffic, giving the win to Swatzina, his first of 2009. The misstep dropped Gunderson to the third finishing position behind Vance Hibbard. Heat race wins went to brand new high school graduate Ashley Lewellen and James Bundy.

Solwold Wins John Carroll Classic in 410 and 360
5/23/09

Alger, WA - Jason Solwold broke through for the first time in 2009 in a BIG fashion at Skagit Speedway, winning both the Associated Asphalt 410 and Budweiser 360 features. The John Carroll Classic presented by I.R.I. is run every year on Memorial Day weekend for a larger purse, and Solwold picked a good weekend to get his race programs online. In the Associated Asphalt 410s, Solwold methodically ran down race leader Nick Engberg, then used a lap 12 restart to power around the high side to take the lead and eventual win in the Shark Racing Engines #73 Maxim. Travis Rutz came home second in the Rudeen Racing #26 Maxim. Third was Colton Heath in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX. Jesse Whitney set quick time in his Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Heat race wins went to Kevin Smith in his Skagit Powdercoating #75 XXX and Eric Fisher in his J&R Paving #59 XXX.

Solwold set the tone for his night early by blasting by race leader Danielle Huson on the outside of corner four on lap six to take the lead and eventual win in the Budweiser 360 division. Piloting the C&S Construction #51 Maxim, Solwold would hold off a late race charge by second place finisher Brock Lemley in the Haling Seafood #40 XXX to score his first triumph of 2009. Huson hung on for third in her Shark Racing Engines #73 Rocket. Brian Kirkpatrick was quick time in the K&B Racing #5k XXX. Heat wins went to Kelsey Carpenter in the Dri-Eaz #79k XXX, Shane Broers in the Firedown Graphics #11 XXX and Huson.

Devin Barnes went wire-to-wire in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint division to score his first career main win. After weeks of playing the bridesmaid to other driver's brides, Barnes put it all together in the Ken's Redmond Autobody #22 XXX, leading all 20 laps of the main without ever sustaining a serious challenge. Second was Michael Bollinger in the Sunworks Tanning #73 Maxim with third going to Matt Van Der Sys in the Timber Trax #30 XXX. Heat race wins went to Lyle Woods in the K&B Racing #12 Becker and Bollinger.

Much like Barnes, Freddie Vela was tired of taking home runner ups...and just like Barnes, he put it all together to score his first career win in the Outlaw Hornets, leading every lap of the main which was shortened due to three red flags. Second went to Don Ward, third to Tyler Ketchum. Heats were won by Ben Gunderson and Jerry Birdsey Jr.

Join us next week for round seven of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series next week at Skagit Speedway when all four classes will once again be in action. Gates open at 530p with racing slated to begin at 7pm. For ticket information, please visit

Alger, WA - The question was posed to Jason Bloodgood in victory lane: if someone had told you before the night started that in a field with former WoO stars Shane Stewart & Jason Solwold and Nascar Craftsmen Truck Rookie Tayler Malsam you would lead every lap of the Associated Asphalt 410 main, what would you say? "I would have told you you're crazy" exclaimed Bloodgood in victory lane after scoring his first career 410 win in the Big John Motorsports #38 J&J on Haggen Food & Pharmacy Night at Skagit Speedway. Bloodgood got a scare on the final restart on lap 22 when Eric Fisher in the J&R Paving #59 XXX showed him a wheel on the inside of turn two and actually edged ahead of him for a second. Bloodgood didn't panic and roared back, reclaming his lead en route to the win. Colton Heath ended up second in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX. Third went to Malsam in the Rudeen Racing #26 Maxim. Heat races were won by Fisher and Travis Rutz in the Rutz Racing #8 XXX. Fast time was Stewart in the Jet City Equipment #7k A.R.T.

Jared Peterson was the beneficiary of a little bit of racer's luck in the Budweiser 360 Series. Peterson took over the lead on lap 22 when race leader Brock Lemley's Kentch Bros. racing #40 XXX tangled with slower traffic, collecting second place runner Henry Van Dam in his Van Dam Dairy #33v as well. This handed the lead to Peterson who brought home his first career win in the Speedmart #9 Rocket. Mitch Olson was second in his Pro-Vac #98 KPC, third was Michael Harris in the Shark Racing Engines #44 XXX. Steve Parker won the B Main in his #23 Eagle. Lemley, Peterson and Harris won the heats. Danielle Huson was fast time in her Shark Racing Engines #73 Rocket.

Defending Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint champion Kelsey Carpenter also benefited from some racer's luck on Saturday night. Race leader Matt Van Der Sys and second place Devin Barnes were doing heavy battle in lapped traffic when disaster struck, collecting both front runners and third place Marc Schutte in one fell swoop, handing the lead to Carpenter in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX on lap 12. Carpenter brought home the win in front of Paul Burdick in the Chevron #9 XXX and Bull Rude's #33 Eagle. Carpenter won a heat race as did Schutte in his #72 XXX.

Cory Swatzina made a last lap pass of Freddy Vela to take his first win of the 2009 season in the Outlaw Hornet division in his Carl's Towing #07. Vela scored a career best second in the Acute Automotive #20. Steve Peters brought the battlewagon #30 home third. Heat race wins went to Wade Swatzina and Peters won heats.

All 4 classes will be in action next Saturday night for Round 2 of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series at Skagit Speedway. For more information, log on to

Skagit Speedway Opens 2007 Season

by Kelly Hart

(Alger, WA) Race fans from all over Western Washington are preparing for the Skagit Speedway season opener slated for Saturday, April 21st. All four defending track champions have announced that they are defending their championships this year during the Haggen Food and Pharmacy Night Season Opener.

The 410 Sprint division will be lead by Lake Stevens, WA driver Travis Jacobson. Expected to chase TJ for the title are 2005 Champion Barry Martinez, veterans Roy Blumenhagen and John Tharp. The young drivers looking to capture a first title include Travis Rutz and Brock Lemley.

In the Budweiser 360 Sprint Division, Sedro Woolley, WA's Steve Kilcup looks to repeat his 2006 success and capture a second straight title in what is arguably the tracks toughest division.     With 35 years of Smith Family racing experience, Kevin Smith has his eyes set on a second straight Cook Road Shell Sportsman division championship.
